SUP Foil Downwind

SUP Foil Downwind involves crossing a distance of open ocean using a paddle and a foil board. The goal is to ride the wind-generated swell from point A to point B. You travel in the same direction as the wind.

The rider starts by paddling hard to catch a bump or wave. Once the board gains speed, the foil lifts out of the water. From this moment on, you stop paddling and use the energy of the swell to keep moving.

This sport requires physical fitness and technique. You must read the ocean surface to find the best energy lines. The rider pumps the board with their legs to connect one wave to the next.

The equipment consists of a longer board and a larger foil wing for stability and lift. It does not use any wind propulsion like a kite or wing; only the paddle and the ocean energy are used.

We consider this the most technical discipline. It offers a continuous ride for kilometers without stopping. It is pure surfing, but on the open ocean instead of at the beach.
